Radio broadcasting - Introduction

Matt Cornock, URY 2007

I have over seven years experience in radio presenting, production and management in a non-professional capacity. I have been involved in running student events, outside broadcasts and station publicity.

In my final year I was awarded Best Presenter at the York University Media Awards.

Induction

I was introduced to the world of radio at Herne Bay's Radio Cabin by Dennis Brandrick and James Beckingham (James now works for emap). After countless shows co-hosting, I gained my own show on Saturday Afternoons often as the warm up for the local football matches. Though I'm a little unsure how the guys felt about my slightly out of date and more-often-than-not cheesy selection of music.

In 2003 I took charge as 'On Air Director' of an RSL which was a two week FM broadcast to the entire town to coincide with the summer Festival Fortnight. Aided by some great people at Radio Cabin, the broadcast was a great success earning the station some extra cash in the process.

URY

On going to York, I took time out of the radio game for my first year but soon got right into the swing of things at the oldest legal independent radio station in the country: University Radio York.

My roles at the station began as Advertising Officer, quickly changing to Assistant Head of Business and later Head of Business. Whilst Head of Business I also held other roles, that of Assistant Station Manager and Acting Treasurer for a duration of fifteen months. In Nov 2006 I stepped down from responsibility to concentrate on degree studies, though continue to present regular shows on the station.

My last role at the station was the training of new presenters to broadcast standard. My knowledge of all aspects of the station was one of my key strengths, being able to do most technical tasks as well as production and presenting. I also planned and co-designed the revamped URY website.
